Art Education Work
Community Work
Why is it important to have students use their voices in their own communities?
The joy that is sparked by the teaching artists and the projects that they design at Spiral Q is fueled by students' voices. By encouraging students to create art that represents social issues that they are passionate about, these teaching artists empower students to use their voices as active members of their communities, showing them that they can make a difference. Notice how the act of marching together creates a sense of belonging for the students, faculty and community.
“Both joy and an unabashed/authentic representation of marginalized communities, cultivated for and by the communities themselves, is at the forefront of our work. Our biggest goal is to strongly and explicitly integrate the social justice aspect of our work into our in and out of school time art education residencies. ”
