Arden Theater

How can we use our practices as teaching artists to empower students to explore new forms of art freely?

The teaching artists at Arden Theater encourage student participation during their performances. This empowers students to use their voices in other areas of their lives too. A moment of active participation can go a long way in building confidence for young people.

But what if a student is shy or doesn’t feel comfortable participating? Teaching artist TJ suggests finding alternative ways for students to participate that are more comfortable methods for them to tell their stories. Giving students free choice to participate in whichever way they decide on empowers them to use their unique voices and talents to tell their stories.

“The Arden is continuing to explore the ways in which our curriculum can offer a diversity of access points to the various ways that students learn, process, engage, and participate. Success will look different for every student and it is our goal to find the magic doors that make the work accessible and engaging to as many different students as possible.

…We focus on trauma-informed teaching practices, student-led programming, collaboration, and social emotional skill-building.”
