Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture
Why is it important for students to learn about other cultures, languages and rhythms?
In this video, notice how Mr. Hafez Kotain shares his identity with his students by teaching them Arabic culture through instruments, music, percussion and language. He shares intricate moments of a culture, which cannot be expressed through a textbook but is felt through the rhythms of a drum beat. By teaching students a language alongside an art form, he helps to make connections between the musical concepts they are learning and the knowledge of the culture that these concepts come from.
“In our Contemporary Artists visual arts classes, we are currently exploring comics and character creation and development and learning about comic artists from the Arab world… Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture has strived to enhance the effectiveness of its arts education offerings, including through regular assessment offered to us by organizations and individuals partnering with Al-Bustan in arts education programming. Our teaching artists have developed educational content and delivered a wide array of visual arts and music classes and courses for at least a decade with Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture as well as within other educational institutions and settings.”
