Brave Practices

Expanding Creative Opportunities

Through Collaborative Action

Join arts educators across Philadelphia and beyond to see how they are creating equitable opportunities for young people to create and imagine.

Brave Practices was a project of the William Penn Foundation,
in partnership with WolfBrown and Creative Generation. It was designed to bring together teaching artists and arts organizations in Philadelphia and beyond to ask:

  • What could the place of the arts and art education be
    in changing long standing inequalities?

  • What is a powerful role for the city’s bravest teaching artists,
classroom teachers, and organizations in doing this work?

  • How can that wider community carve out new
and needed directions for their work throughout the city.

By observing and responding to one another’s work, Philadelphia teaching artists identified five frontiers for the working they want to be doing:

Belonging by celebrating students’ full identities

Empowering students as creators

Reaching beyond the classroom

Re-inventing research

Imagining the future
